Spruce top Style 17 Martins are rare . . .most of us know the all mahogany style 17 that was introduced in 1922 and discontinued in 1961. (However, it was available again from 66-68 and then available as a special order from 82-88).

This 1906 0-17, serial number 10309, is in great shape considering it is approaching 120 years old. This historical instrument weighs practically nothing and extremely responsive and articulate. The spruce top, mahogany back and side models were made from 1906 through 1918. The first few years of this model also had cedar necks.

Of course an instrument has had some very normal repairs through it's history:

  • Neck reset
  • Refret with modern "T" frets, though the original bar frets are in the case.
  • Replaced tuners
  • Replaced bridge plate and bridge reglue (possible replacement bridge) there is a very small hairline crack through bridge pin area on strings E through G, though it looks like it has been there for some time. Fossilized walrus tusk bridge pins.
  • Top overspray evident around bridge area.
  • Evidence of a one time open back seam on the lower bout. Glued and stable.

If you are looking for a truly historic guitar that is still budget friendly, this is indeed your instrument.
